These wrap necklaces are summer-iffic. They look best with a tank T-shirt or other top that shows a lot of neck. The pairing of faceted, semi-precious stones with a casual lariat that’s simply tied on feels very “California” to me. I got the idea for them after having made some wrap bracelets.

I’ll debut one of these tomorrow when I go to California Apparel News, a fashion trade newspaper where I’m consulting (on social media) for a month or so. I’m curious if the jewelry attracts any comments. I’m going to try to find someone in the office with a less mottled neck than mine to do a little modeling for more photos!

Variations on a Theme

Rachel, a woman from whom I have been buying stones such as those you see here, has been giving me valuable guidance as I prepare to take a couple of collections to a showroom to “audition” for representation. She had advised me to narrow down my themes, which were all over the place.

I did a series of pastel stone necklaces, rounding out the groups with earrings in hoop and threader variations. I pinned the groups on black velvet boards. 3 What an improvement from the spastic amounts of pieces in bags with dozens of plastic pockets. I was quite proud of the upgraded presentation.

Until I sat down with Rachel. There was not enough variation in the samples. Not enough pieces in the groups. And some of the chains I had chosen were much too thick for what they were holding.

1The feedback didn’t dismay me. Quite the opposite. Rachel is spoon-feeding me priceless knowledge from her 12 years in the jewelry business. In fact, to my surprise, she was delighted, rather than offended, when I cribbed one of her most successful ideas (the wrap bracelets, which put her on the map as a designer).

So these will be added to and fleshed out. I return to Rachel’s house for a second second opinion next week.

Valentine’s Day Collection

I’ve been wearing a lariat necklace that I tie like a men’s tie (which really just creates a large circle through which each end threads). My friend Nathalie Seaver, who is a clothing designer and also runs an eponymous boutique, liked it enough to ask me to make more for a Valentine’s Day party she is throwing at her Third Street shop. Here are the results, with a couple of more femme pieces thrown in for good measure.

These will all retail for about $60 a pop.

Identity Crisis

The February issue of InStyle magazine announces the return of ID bracelets. Kinda reminds me of the periodic proclamations that “Pretty is back!” by fashion magazines. ID bracelets, like Chanel No 5 and vintage cars, are never not cool. The mag recommends a sterling silver one by Ann Dexter-Jones for $3,200. At the risk of letting out a trade secret, sterling silver is not really all that expensive. Why, this Hexagon ID bracelet, turned into a velvet-accented choker, costs a mere $45.

French Identity

I found this vintage ID bracelet last June in a flea market in Paris. The seller seemed bothered when I asked him the prices of items in a box of dirt-encrusted hardware and trinkets; he was more interested in the lunch he was having (with plenty of red wine) on a card table with some friends.

I was quite surprised when I put the ID bracelet in a bath of silver polish–it’s sterling! I added some midnight-blue stretch lace and a sterling clasp to turn it into a necklace.

Giving Tuesday – I Drink, Therefore I Give

Art Deco necklace in glass and silk beads with sterling silver chain and clasp, $49.

As a fashion editor, I often raise an eyebrow over events cooked up to encourage people to shop. I didn’t participate in Black Friday or Cyber Monday–did you? But it’s hard to hate Giving Tuesday, a concept promoted by New York’s 92nd Street Y. On NPR yesterday, a woman explained that the cultural organization hoped to edge charitable giving out of the obligatory end-of-year-check-writing and into a more social realm of people sharing their purchases and causes with each other. I’m not so sure that will take off, but I applaud the effort–especially since, if NPR is correct, philanthropy is in decline.

That said, I know from conversations with many young entrepreneurs that give-back is a fundamental part of their business model; an expected aspect from any new fashion business. And of course that is the case with Hexagon. The company gives a straight 10% of gross receipts to Covenant House California. In part because not giving back is douchebaggy. I benefitted from it handsomely as a kid. But also in part because I got tipsy at a charity auction. Here’s what happened.

It took many months for me to start working with the vintage beads I have acquired since February. I was overwhelmed by the amount of different shapes, sizes, colors, and materials. But once I’d snagged the Chiclets-like pink glass beads, I decided to dive in. Stepping up my materials a bit, I used only sterling silver and 14K gold fill chains. Here are the first pieces, each selling for $29 a pop on the Etsy shop.

It’s only in retrospect that I see my tendency to add a bright, tomato red to jewelry these days. It’s a color that loves silver and gold equally—unlike green, which leans strongly towards gold. Here’s the latest batch of creations, which are all for sale on the Hexagon Etsy shop starting at $29.

Sad end to a beloved piece of sea-glass jewelry. But what a fun night.
