michele and scarlettMy friends Michele Lamy and Scarlett Rouge are the only duo I know that can pull off mother-daughter dressing.

This is on my mind because Mother’s Day is one month away. I’m not one for Hallmark holidays, but I admit to being a bit sentimental when it comes to family and the amulets we wear to keep them close: a crest, a monogram, a ring passed down over generations.

motherandchildSo when I was about to leave for a lunch this week with a friend who is a mother, I wondered if I could make her a present with some sort of family element to it. The result was this wrap bracelet, in metallic brown leather, with my friend’s birthstone in the middle–an amethyst–flanked by the birthstones of her two kids.

stephaniebraceletWell, almost. One of her kids was born in September, whose birthstone is sapphire. Not having a precious gem on hand, I used iolite, which is also called “water sapphire.” It has a wonderfully smoky indigo color.

In the Beginning

This is a piece of jewelry that my mother designed and had made for herself for her 50th birthday. My mom is a lot like a kid—she still buys pop-up books—so a functional top was an appropriate treat for her as she ascended to the fifth floor.

The pendant is pretty cool from the side, but the best view of it is when looking straight down. Only the wearer gets that perspective all the time.

That, it a nutshell, is what Hexagon is about. A quiet feeling of satisfaction. I started the company in 2012, as I approach the age my mom was when she dreamed up this bauble. Taking what I predict will be a permanent sabbatical from work as a fashion editor and journalist, I started making jewelry and handbags out of my prized pieces of vintage mixed with contemporary elements both new and thrift-scored.

So far—it’s been a couple of weeks—it has felt like being high. Complete with the 5 am bedtime. I want to continue playing in the materials tonight, but it’s past 3 am. So I’ll just post this piece I made just for fun from a pin I found in Montelimar, France, and a plastic baby served inside Jell-O last year when a pregnant friend came to dinner.
