When Success Kills

ice on the runwayOne of the reasons I became a journalist was because I love telling stories.

I also love gossip, good or bad.

So it’s hard for me to keep quiet about an amazing media opportunity for Hexagon. It was mentioned to me month ago, and since then I have been mailing photographs and samples and discussing prices with the outlet.

“Can you handle hundreds of orders?” my sister asked. Um…if this deal goes through, I’m going to have to. I have been told that my site could get 25,000 hits once the story goes out.

Back to journalism. I have written several stories, such as this one, about a fashion company going under for inability to produce orders. Success, it turns out, can kill.

IMG_0934It’s odd being in the position of not knowing if I’ll be able to get the materials I need on time. Calls and emails today to close to 10 companies that wholesale the items I need have gone unanswered.

So I am vacillating between being very excited, and scared–and trying to stay focused, since the whole thing may not happen.

OMG my email just beeped. PLease let it be the leather guy.

Hexagons New ‘It’ Girl

At the fashion shoots I have styled and produced over the past 15 years, I came to learn how important the model is. So much more than a pretty face, or body part, on which to show clothing and accessories, the model is the magic dust that fabulizes everything. To paraphrase Vidal Sassoon, if she doesn’t feel good, you don’t look good.

I got very lucky when Alana Hillen agreed to model for the first Hexagon look book. I had met her through a friend the day before the shoot, and asked her to swing by for what I thought would be a half hour’s worth of photos. (It was more like 3 hours.)

When Alana showed up, fresh faced and bright, I realized she was the perfect woman for the jewelry: Natural, effortlessly chic, authentic and interesting. She had a sly smile, and she knew–or rather, WAS– everything the jewelry needed in a model. And although she volunteered to help me out for free, she had thought to paint her nails and put some self-tanner on. So many of the pro models I have worked with don’t go through the trouble.

Though Alana is from Hawaii, she seemed the quintessential California girl, from her blond hair to her entrepreneurial streak (she’s launching a clothing line called Studs and Idols).

I’m waiting for the images from the photographer, Reuben Reynoso (who is equally wonderful, and whose brilliant lighting gave the shoot an editorial, rather than catalog, look). For now, all I have are these images…and the contented feeling of a shoot that was everything I hoped it would be.

Very first glass pieces for my studio kiln’s virgin voyage. I hope I don’t burn the place down.

I’m on an LGBT kick with the vintage pins. These go for $29 each on the Etsy shop.

I have an excuse to use an overused word in today’s parlance, since I now own this Kingpin 88 kiln! Going up to a fiery 2000 degrees, it is, as Paris Hilton might say if she knew what it was, HOT! So much for my serene terrace, AKA Le Porch. For this is where the kiln will live. I’ll be able to make silver charms and rings in the kiln, as well as glass and ceramic pieces. This is my most significant purchase so far as a jewelry designer. I am quite skeerxcited (a family term meaning scared and excited).

The ice pendant is a success!

Attaching this particular vintage brooch to the top of the vial allows the water to evaporate and the wearer to add more.

I’ll bring this to NYC next week to see if it helps me cool down. Or at least start a conversation or two.

A Different Kind of Ice

So much for the trip I’d been planning for NYC, to seek stores to carry Hexagon. The Big Apple has become The Apple Fritter, with sweltering temperatures unlikely to fall anytime this month. (If an actress like Ashley Greene has resorted to dressing this way, imagine what mere mortals are suffering.)

Thinking about the sweaty souls in Manhattan, and in Cincinnati, where my family lives, I wondered if jewelry could possible offer any respite. Silly question? Mais, non! Especially when you happen to be a designer big on vials. I have just filled a round plastic vial with water and set it in the freezer. In a few hours I’ll add wire, attach a chain, and wear it to see if it provides a satisfactory cooling effect on the décolleté.

Enamored with Enamels

I have always had a thing for enamel. I have a terrific (if small) collection of tole dishes, and I never tire of gazing at their rich colors and (mostly) ’50s and ’60s designs.

When I “inherited” the CIA cache of jewelry materials, I thrilled to find some terrific small enamel pieces in it. But I didn’t know what to do with them. They were so fabulous on their own; what could I do to make them more modern, more interesting?

I reviewed my “greatest hits,” the pieces that sold right away from my very first collection (WAAAY back in February!). This pendant here, a mix of chrysoprase, rhinestones, and vintage enamel was snapped up by Bee Free boutique, and it sold immediately. Unfortunately for me now, I have no black-and-white pieces, nor any rectangular pieces. But I do have plenty of rhinestones.

And so last Monday, a sunny afternoon, I assembled the pieces that you see here. Let me know which one(s) you like best! I’m leaning toward the bronze boomerang with the violet floral rhinestones.

The Bead Walk

I’m doing a new dance around the design studio. It’s similar to the camel walk, a dance my mom tried to show me when I was a kid but I was laughing to hard to repeat the steps. But you can see it here. The Bead Walk begins with you stepping on a bead, then lifting either the front or back of your foot quickly so as not to harm the precious object (despite the fact that you have about 100,000 of them). You come down quickly on the other foot, which invariably lands on another bead. Wish I were as elegant a stepper as this guy! For more midcentury dance lessons, click here.
